Back in the US, back in the US, back in the US of A!!

After 15 inspiring years of life in Amsterdam, it was time to come home. My Dutch wife Sietske and I chose to live in San Francisco, the most European of American cities;a walkable and bikable city with great weather and friendly people. They say you are what you eat. An artist is what he culturally eats, or is immersed in. In New York I had to make Big and Loud;In Amsterdam, Small and Quiet. I invented and perfected the 7-person ConferenceBike while living in the great biking culture that is the Netherlands. Now I have to wonder how life in San Francisco will influence the art that I do next.

What an exciting time we live in! When I left the US for the Netherlands in 1994 the World Trade Center was standing, Bill Clinton was president and America was held in high regard around the world. The suggestion that a black man could be elected president was still unimaginable. And the internet had not been invented!
In 2010 we are truly living in a global village and I am able to spread the word about what I do, from anywhere. I wake up to emails from every corner of the world: "how can I learn more about the ConferenceBike?" There are now 300 CoBies in more than 16 countries.

The Lightmobile was beloved in New York and then in Amsterdam. Now I am taking to the streets of San Francisco with it. After 25 years the Lightmobile still stops people in their tracks! And I still love seeing the surprised and happy reactions. I guess that's just my job: to bring as much joy to as many people as possible with my work. It's a tough job, but SOMEbody's got to do it!
